Wholesale FAQs:

When does the farm deliver?

We deliver on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays beginning in the morning. All of our clients get their salad mix and other produce by early afternoon. In addition, we are happy to bring items to the Santa Barbara farmers’ markets on Tuesday and Saturday or to Carpinteria market on Thursday where you can pick them up at the same wholesale cost.

What makes Shepherd Farms so special?

The 40-acre farm lies on an old alluvial lakebed with the best soil in Carpinteria according to Tom. We have a natural pond that hosts waterfowl and provides a natural source for our drip irrigation system. The farm is incredibly diverse to keep our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes exciting for local residents. The salad mix is the primary product sold to restaurants and merchants but we offer other products at our wholesale cost when we have them available. The operation itself is also special. A small staff of five pickers (some of who have been with Tom for over 20 years) combine with a small crew of WWOOF volunteers (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) and minimal other employees to operate the farm in an efficient manner. Some of our products also come from the UC Natural Reserve at Sedgwick Ranch where Tom was invited by UCSB to operate an organic farm. We are a model for the growth of good farming practices in a world of too many pesticides and monoculture operations.

How fresh is the produce that is delivered?

The salad delivered on Wednesday and Friday is picked the day before. We pick for Monday’s delivery on Saturday. Often we pick more in the morning of delivery days as needed to fulfill demand. Other items like our strawberries are usually picked bright red the day they are delivered. Nothing is picked before it has ripened on the plant!

Is the farm certified organic?

No. To certify each individual item on the farm when we may only plant 2-4 rows of a crop would leave us with a mound of paperwork and force us to charge everyone more. All are invited to check out our operation to see how it is run, and Tom is happy to demonstrate the sustainability of the operation by explaining farming practices and even soil testing.

Why should a restaurant pay more for a product that it can buy for less money elsewhere?

Quality, quality and quality. Quality of the taste of the products. Quality of the sustainable land practices. Quality of the community aspect of the operation. In addition, many of the products we offer are priced competitively and sometimes less than other purveyors.

Do you always have your products available?

No. We operate an organic farm that has weather variables and seasonal changes. We do plant a diverse array of different lettuce to help maintain our availability. Our farm will give you at least a day’s notice when your scheduled delivery will not be available. We will also provide a fresh list of what we have available as our production changes.

Can we come visit the farm?

Absolutely! Check out our goats and chickens, pick a warm strawberry right off the plant, and gain an understanding of what makes the farm so special. Please make an appointment and bring your staff!
